Those of you fortunate enough to have spent the summer living under a rock or intoxicated (or living under a rock and intoxicated - hey, don't knock it 'til you've tried it) have missed out on yet another unnecessary controversy Canada's doctors have got themselves embroiled in. No, I'm not talking about the proposed tax hike on private corporations, or the deal over binding arbitration in Ontario, or the brouhaha over the Canadian Medical Association's vaguely worded (but traitorous!) strategic plan.
No, I'm talking about social media outrage!
Whether you prefer Facebook, blogs, medical forums, or Twitter, there is no shortage of ways to see just how riled up the medical community is. It's the Greedy Capitalists vs. the Pollyanna Socialists...a main event fracas! The pot shots! The umbrage! Will it degenerate into chaos?!?
Who knows? And though I made a promise to myself to back away from all this nonsense, I just can't stop myself. And after wasting time I could have spent writing, oh, I don't know, something of substance, I've discovered what the persoalan is...why it is that doctors are becoming so bitter towards one another, tweeting and re-tweeting and tweet-quoting and tsk-tsking and frowny-facing and "j'accuse!"ing and thumbs-downing to no end:
It's because they don't argue or insult each other enough on social media. We're all too reserved, too uptight, and too quick to make mountains out of molehills over every inconsequential tweet.
So as a service to my colleagues (with a hearty thanks to "Deep Throat", who graciously sent me this idea and some publicly available statistics for consideration - U Rulz!), I am offering my website, The Flame Broiled Doctor blog, as a place where doctors can heckle and kvetch as they see fit - so long as there's no names, no race/ethnicity/gender slurs, and no A/B/C/F/MF/P/S/T-words - and send any potshot they'd like in my direction. Am I a radical leftist liberal fascist? A greedy oligarchic reactionary? Screw it, why not call me both? Bring it on!
So if you are a doctor who's tired of doctors against doctors, or even a doctor who's tired of doctors that are tired of doctors against doctors, I'm here to be your dustbin for diatribes, your sanctuary for scorn, and your inbox for insults.
Because it seems the only way doctors will ever find common (digital) ground is to contest the living shit out of every square inch of it.
